Blowing Out The Cobwebs

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the weather was perfect for the Sarries to make the long journey North of the M4 to Tongwynlais RFC.

With the Sarries facing a huge opposing front five, they soon found themselves struggling in the scrums. This didnt help with the loss of skipper Aled Hughes, who had to leave the field after finding his face trapped under the boot of one of the Ton forwards who wanted to show off his Riverdance skills. This was a huge loss so early on in the game, but on came Mark Savage who managed to step into the huge boots of Aled. Chris 'Evergreen' Parks then took over the roll of Captain.

With the home team taking advantage of their size early on, they were first to cross the line with a rumbling drive from the forwards. They failed to add the extras to the Sarries relief. On 22 minutes, Sarries forwards managed to secure some good ball which released the backs. When Chris Parks found himself with ball in hand, he decided to show the supporters why he is still the best No:10 in the club. The Tongwynlais backline were first left flat footed and then stunned, as a dart of the eyes and a show of the ball, they were opened up like Aleds forehead. Old Evergreen then crossed under the posts to make it 5-5. Jimmy 'The Hitman' Chau slotted the conversion over to add the points.

With a few more breaks from the Sarries back line, they failed to instill the killer instinct which resulted in several try scoring moves being cut short. Chris Parks then broke through and tried an outrageous around the back pass which resulted in him being penalised later on in the evening.

With the Ton forwards failing to keep up their early dominence, they were soon found themselves unable to stay on their feet. With a penalty just outside the 22, Jimmy Chau again stepped up and added the 3 points.

Half time, Tongwynlais 5 Sarries 10.

With the second half underway, it was the Sarries turn to feel the shrill blast of the referees whistle in their ears. Indiscipline from the Sarries forwards resulted in the Ton kicker adding 3 points, to their 5.

With the Tongwynlais forwards boosted by the penalty, they soon found themselves sniffing out the whitewash once more. Although they again failed to add the extras, the home team found themselves 3 points ahead.

Then came the turning point of the game. The Sarries found themselves on the opposition try line, and stalwart Jon Phillips, managed to spot a gap and crashed/fell over the line to make it 10:13 to the Sarries. After Jimmy Chau, had to leave the field earlier on with a pulled hamstring, kicking duties were handed over to Adam 'The Pig' Worthington. With the touch of an Italian Master, 'The Pig' put the Sarries further ahead with the conversion bisecting the posts.

With 8 minutes to go, it was the livewire Joe Ellis finding himself with players outside him and a startled defence in front of him. Joey decided to back himself and his pace, and crossed the Ton line with ease. Up again came Adam Worthington, who this time failed to add the extras.

With an uneventful finale, the referee brough the game to a close. A gutsy performance, with the Sarries deservedly coming out on top.
